From: Chad Smith
------------------------------------------------------
REMEMBER: Cell Phone Numbers Go Public this month.
REMINDER..... all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing
companies and you will start to receive sales calls.

.... YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone:
888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list It will only take a minute of your
time.. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell
phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different
phone number.

HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON .. It takes about 20 seconds.

=============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ I got an email from THE POLICE saying that it was legit. It wasn't from a policeman - but from the official email of the Metropolitan Police Department of the City of Saint Louis, MO. It's not like I forwarded something that Bob-in-the-next-cubicle's mother-in-law said. - Chad W Smith "I like a man who's middle name is W." - President George W. =============================================================== From: Stephen Rees ------------------------------------------------------ Scammers are getting much better at making stuff believable. A recent visit to craigslist made this pretty obvious. As to this message, logic is helpful. Some things that should raise red flags include... ...that it claimed to be from the St. Louis Police Department ...who would have his email address why? ...and who would give a crap about this topic why? .../me is hoping he didn't naively follow the non-descript link cause I don't see anything about a PD in the message. 'From' fields are routinely faked in spam. If you didn't personally give them your email address and/or don't know them personally, 99.9% of the time it is spam.

=============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ It is the police. I receive regular updates from the SLMPD all the time, everything from emergency weather alerts, Amber alerts, reminders of road closings, etc. It is the same email. It is through a service called Nixle, which I referred to in a conversation about radios being used for emergencies. It isn't faked. Obviously, someone at the SLMPD got the old scam forward, and either was, or convinced the person in charge of issuing alerts that it was legit, so they posted it, thinking, as many do, that they are helping the public. - Chad W Smith "I like a man who's middle name is W." - President George W. =============================================================== From: Stephen Rees ------------------------------------------------------ Cool, Chad. It's too funny the PD fell for it! As to the political (Phil)...I typically claim Republican, but you'll never see me forward you junk. :) However, I did just recently get my citizenship. I only got to vote the first time as an American this last go-round, and didn't feel comfortable voting for the Rep. candidate. So maybe I should change my affiliation to Independent Conservative. Lol. :D

=============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ Yes, I am a Republican, or at least I primarily vote Republican, but this email had nothing to do with my political views. The email itself is not political in anyway. In my experience, both liberals and conservatives have cell phones, and neither group wants unsolicited sales calls. The email was from a very Democratic-heavy police department, in a Democratic city, with a Democratic mayor.... Nothing Republican about the email, nor its source. Just let it go, for f's sake. I've already apologized for not verifying that my police department was spreading mis-information. All I was trying to do was save people from unwanted sales calls. A very anti-Libertarian view on my part, now that I think about it. And while the information about cell phone numbers was incorrect, the 800 number was actually the Do Not Call Registry. And registering your cell phone number with them does not hurt you in anyway. - Chad W Smith "I like a man who's middle name is W." - President George W. Bush - February 10, 2003 bit.ly/gwb-dubya
