Any reccomendations?
I need 3 or so Linux based 5" to 12" tablets to run
a "pick a number" application that can print a receipt
on a receipt printer with a number and a time stamp.
It'll also put that number and timestamp in a MySQL
table elsewhere via ethernet (so it needs a real 'net jack).
I was going to grab an Archos at Office Depot today
to play with, just for fun. But they were out.
If they run Android, will they support a USB printer
and a Perl/TCL/QT style desktop application easily?
But I'd love to have a pure Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) small "cheap" tablet,
to do just this one thing.

It also = doubles as a kick-ass voip phone using Bria or some such... Phil Sieg President snapfon www.snapfon.com office: 423.535.9968 x123 mobile: 423.331.0725 fax: 423.265.9820 Any reccomendations? Also any Chinese tech importer websites will have tons of them, most with discounts if you order 5 or more. Of course, my N810 is still for sale. :) - Chad W Smith "I like a man who's middle name is W." - President George W. Like really bad. You get what you pay for. The archos is the only "good" android tab I have found so far in the current crop of offerings. Gingerbread brought "Cloud Print" which is essentially web printing via Google Chrome. Honeycomb might change this. You can't run anything but Dalvik or NDK-compiled apps on Android. NDK encircles about every language under the sun including Perl (perldroid), but as said before: Android is not Java, Android is not Linux. Maybe find some cheap Maemo tablets? =============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ Did anyone other than Nokia ever make anything that ran Maemo? It probably won't happen any time soon. http://www.google.com/m?hl=en&gl=us&client=ms-android-tmobile-us&source=android-launcher-search&q=cups+on+android If you want to print, you need to run Gingerbread and have a constant-on internet connection to use Cloud Print. Knowing the places mike goes, this isn't possible. What about buying netbooks instead? -Cameron Sent via an Android phone I can tell you what tablet NOT to buy ;-) and, call me crazy, but I really like my $100 Sylvania netbook (which dual-boots WinCE or Debian). A touchscreen (small 7 - 12") would be perfect. Looking to replace one of these kinds of things: http://www.takeanumbersystems.com/info =============================================================== From: Benjamin Stewart ------------------------------------------------------ This is just an idea, but what about having a separate print server, and running an app on the tablets that tells a script on the print server "print X ticket on Y printer?" Of course this would only be viable if you were going all custom anyway. =============================================================== From: Mike Harrison ------------------------------------------------------ Network receipt printers are more expensive in many ways, and they have a pile of USB receipt printers I can abuse.. But a very good thought for other places. If so, then you could get a few of those $99 7" Netbooks with that OS. And I haven't looked into the scene for a while, but I know there were a lot of Touchscreen modding kits all over ebay a few years back... - Chad W Smith "I like a man who's middle name is W." - President George W.
