From: Phil Shapiro ------------------------------------------------------ Hi Chugaluggers, At my public library job in the DC-area, my greatest need is helping youth develop some digital literacy goals and competences. At the computer center which I help run (with 28 Linux stations), the youth are spending way too much time playing games. They're entitled to use their time in whatever way they choose, but as a community, we need to do a lot better giving them constructive goals to work towards in their outside of school time. These goals are particularly needed by youth who aren't receiving sufficient goal guidance in their homes. Mozilla Badges will be really useful for this -- and the new Moodle module for Mozilla Badges sounds like it could be make the whole thing easier to implement. For a very interesting blog post about the Mozilla Badges module for Moodle, see https://twitter.com/iaincheckland/status/293237778156777473 Exploring how the Mozilla Badges module for Moodle could work would be a neat group project for a Linux user group, partnering with a makerspace and public library. If only -- if only there were a city someplace in the United States where relationships between these entities already existed. I betcha some foundation funds could easily be raised for such a project. Not just the local foundation, but the national foundations, like the MacArthur Foundation. phil -- Phil Shapiro, pshapiro@his.com http://www.his.com/pshapiro/briefbio.html http://www.twitter.com/philshapiro http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom begins with wonder." - Socrates "Learning happens thru gentleness."=============================================================== From: Sean Brewer ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.codecademy.com/ Offer incentives for attained badges.
