Steak. Ham, Spam and Noise on the list.

From: Mike Harrison

> I'm not sure there is a steak in this world worth a 2 hour drive :D

First of all: I'm in Dallas this week. The steak has been awesome.

That was about steak.

This is about "Ham":

The mailing list group has grown a lot smaller over the last few days,
the amount of noise and untrimmed irrelevant top posted messages
are causing peole to leave the list, Chugalug, etc.. in droves.

So that person that knows the answer to your really really hard question
might not be around when you need it. You'll be trying to make sense of
ExpertsExchange posts instead (that was sarcasm).

That person that has a double helix byte spanner and will meet you for
lunch to share it, won't be around.

And when you post something truly awesome, there will be less people to
provide external validation, kudos and applause.

And when you need a job, or employee, there will be less people to spread
the word.

Chugalug's an awesome force in Chattanooga: A bunch of Penguin-heads that
sometimes come together and make shit happen. But sometimes, we forget
what we share in common, and get upset at each other over whome and why we
do business with other entities. Funny thing is, sex and politics are less
taboo here than who you registered a domain with.

So, I'm asking, nicely. Let's aim higher. Please.

And PLEASE learn how to use whatever crappy interface you use (they all
suck, just differently) for email and trim the redundant noise from your
posts/replies/etc..

Option/Plan 9 from outer space: I'll write a filter that replaces that
extra crap with "Barney Dialogue" for the mailing list...

"I love you, you love me.. We're a happy fam-i-leee..."

=============================================================== From: Bobby Burden ------------------------------------------------------ Yea, I posted a job listing here a couple of weeks ago (and a follow up offering a referral fee) and I basically got no response. I rarely say much of anything on this list (or any other), just read what comes through, and I'm surprised by how quiet the list has been for the past several weeks.

=============================================================== From: rdflowers ------------------------------------------------------ Mike, With all respect, isn't it possible that some of the drop-off has to do with the vanishing of the archives and of digest mode, and the double messages, and ( unless I missed it ) no announcement and no information when it might be fixed? =============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Bobby, I wish I knew someone who could do what you're wanting. I am always interested in extra money. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who fits your criteria. Most of the geeks I know are on this list. :D Mike: I am trying to keep the OT posts to a handful per year...preferably NOT within the same month. ;D And I do try and trim quotes as much as possible. :D

=============================================================== From: Dave Brockman ------------------------------------------------------ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Nah, I'm gonna go with the two day barrage of 60+ floggings (I don't have accurate counts due to twit-filtering prior to archiving in my inbox) of what turns out is not only not a dead horse, it's actually a chicken, covered in cow-manure. I can't do anything about digests, but if you really need them, I can tar up my archives, I have my archives from 5/2007 to current in one box that will be easy enough to tar and put up for you. =============================================================== From: Mike Harrison ------------------------------------------------------ Archives: Will get around to it eventually. Maybe in the next week. Digest Mode: I see a lot of people have successfully set their account to it. If you have, and it's not working for you. please thwack me over the head. Double Messages: When some people post to the list, I see it gets TWO "reply to" email addresses. Yours is one of them. So when someone replies, it goes to both. You probably get the one addresses to your email address first, and the chugalug@chugalug.org reply to address second. My assumption is, you want a specific reply to, as it is in your email software config (reply-to is a specific email header). the default behavior is to add the list Reply To header. I just told MailMan to "Strip Existing Reply Headers" which should resolve the issue with your email software configuration. This email is a test. If anyone gets TWO of this message, as the original, please grab a nerf bat and thwack me over the head. The message headers you received from both emails would be welcome spikes on the nerf bat. Lastly, the Chugalug Money Back Guarantee: You may be entitled to a refund of your past years dues, and the time you wasted on the list will be added on to the remainder of your life. Please apply by filling out for twenty-seven B stroke six and get it co-signed by Harry Tuttle. Posthumously of course, so the actual time can be accurately verified.

=============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ Mike - I would just like to say thank you for your work in hosting the list and whatnot. To all - I apologize for my contribution to the Noise/Ham. Starts shopping for wad-less panties. *- Chad W. Smith*

=============================================================== From: William Wade ------------------------------------------------------ I second the thanks to Mike. I and likely the other Gmail interface users do not notice the noise as much with the threaded comments, but without that I don't think I could handle it.

=============================================================== From: rdflowers ------------------------------------------------------ I heartily third the thanks to Mike. I don't notice the noise because I've been getting one copy in regular mode ( for scanning of topics, deleting most, reading a few with interesting or time-sensitive topics or on threads I've gotten into ( I actually liked the flame-fest, for an example of how perverted I am ), and THEN deleting ), and one copy in digest to keep and ( in theory at least ) eventually read all of. I would rather wade through some extra noise than miss signal. I'm getting two copies, because one of them is supposed to be digest. I'll go fix myself. ----- Message from willm.wade@gmail.com --------- Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2012 21:22:25 -0400 From: William Wade Reply-To: Chattanooga Unix Gnu Android Linux Users Group Subject: Re: [Chugalug] Steak. =============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ Mike, One more thing I have noticed is that the widget on http://chugalug.org is not working properly. I don't think it is counting the posts properly (I *Think* at least). Right now I am showing to have 473 posts before sending this email. http://www.chugalug.org/widget/members If this doesn't change to 474 after this email, we can confirm its broken :)

=============================================================== From: Aaron welch ------------------------------------------------------ I like the noise if it is kept cordial. I have found the noise related topics more in my wheelhouse than the actual linux related items. Just my 2 cents, YMMV. Also like to say thanks to Mike for maintaining a forum for geeks, nerds, and weirdos to hang out, talk, yell, and hold foamy communion from time to time. -AW

=============================================================== From: Ed King ------------------------------------------------------ At the time it was originally posted, I forwarded your job listing to everyone I knew that I thought might be qualified/interested, but there were no takers. I almost considered applying for it myself, just to see if I would get the $500 referral reward for referring myself, lol.
