OK=2C here it goes: I'm calling a Chugalug meeting!
As I described in an earlier thread=2C we're transforming the attic level o=
f the downtown Chattanooga Public Library into The 4th Floor=2C a library e=
nvironment catering to knowledge production rather than knowledge consumpti=
on. At the bottom of the email I've pasted some copy describing the vision=
 for the project so that we are all on the same page.

I'd like to invite everyone to an open discussion / charrette session at Th=
e 4th Floor on Tuesday=2C August 14th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  I'm sorry=
=2C I know someone said they hoped for a Saturday but I'm having a hard tim=
e making that work for personal reasons. =20

Here's what to expect=2C and what I need from participants:RSVP ASAP.  I ne=
ed to know how many people are coming. The space is raw and semi-furnished=
. There are old chairs around=2C but you may be sitting on a concrete floo=
r.  So it goes.
We haven't got wireless running up there yet. If you have a MiFi or a hots=
pot or something and you'd be willing to donate connectivity=2C please cont=
act me.I need some volunteer notetakers who would manage and steer a live p=
ublic google doc that evening so we have some record of what we are talking=
 about.
If you are that person who shoots video of everywhere you go=2C talk to me.=
  That would help as well.Be cool. Be respectful of others. Treat this pl=
ace like you have a stake in it=2C because you do.
The library=2C and I hope all of you already know this=2C is at 1001 Broad =
Street. To get to The 4th Floor you'll have to take the elevator to the 3r=
d floor and walk up one flight of stairs.

Cannot wait to hear from you all. Together we'll be able to make something=
 awesome happen here.-----------------
About:=20
The Chattanooga Public Library (CPL) has been given a unique opportunity to=
 redefine what a public library can do for its community. Thanks to EPB=92=
s gig-per-second internet connection and a next-generation wireless network=
=2C CPL is taking the express lane into the future. We=92re bypassing the =
wiring and standards of the early aughts and building infrastructure and co=
nnectivity for the next generation. We=92re building this network througho=
ut all of our facilities=2C but on the top level of the downtown facility i=
s where we=92re truly evolving the library. It will be called The 4th Floo=
r.

The 4th Floor is an art and technology facility and residency program that =
refocuses the library as a place for the production of content=2C rather th=
an the consumption of content. On The 4th Floor=2C we will break down cont=
ent and media production into different types of activities=2C each of whic=
h we call a =91module=92. Each module will be operated with a different co=
mmunity sponsor or partner. Modules stand alone or work in conjunction wit=
h other modules. Examples of modules might be audio remix and record=2C vi=
deo remix and record=2C collaboration space=2C scanning=2C digital design=
=2C and others.=20

The 4th Floor will be a public media lab=2C an information commons=2C a gal=
lery=2C a theater=2C a classroom=2C and a makerspace.  It will be a collabo=
rative=2C co-creative space for entrepreneurs=2C artists=2C scholars=2C chi=
ldren=2C cooks=2C clowns and characters. It will be a learning lab and a 2=
1st century public information space. It will be the best of its kind.

While we support the co-creative activities described above=2C the library =
will also be working with one very important partner=2C Polaris=2C to creat=
e the next generation library catalog. The library catalog of the past is =
dead=3B it is an inventory of static warehoused products. The library cata=
log of the future will work in harmony with The 4th Floor=2C facilitating t=
he discovery of community-created eBooks=2C videography=2C songwriting=2C a=
nd other objects and products while intelligently and strategically integra=
ting them with the collections from the past.=20

Finally=2C though not conclusively=2C we=92ll host a competitive residency =
program on The 4th Floor=2C giving accepted applicants a window of time in =
which they are granted 24 hour access to the facility to work on their own =
project. Residents will be granted an allotment of funds from the library=
=92s materials budget to purchase books and other information resources to =
support their project as well as both physical and digital workspace. The =
library would continue to own and lend these materials after the residency =
is over. Residents would also do public programs about their work and thei=
r process during their stay=2C while contributing and displaying their work=
 in The 4th Floor gallery space.

To get there=2C take the elev= ator or stairs to the 3rd floor=2C and then walk up the last flight of stai= rs to the 4th. The elevator does go all the way up=2C but it requires a ke= ycode. If you need special assistance getting up the last flight of stairs= please let me know and I'll arrange to help with that. Looking forward to showing you all the space=2C and hearing what you have = to say! If you have a lumber crayon or a marker bring it along: you'll be = invited to draw your ideas for the space directly on the walls! I'm going = to pick up a few markers or something as well. Another reminder: anyone who has wireless hotspots please do bring them and= share with your friends. It'll be about a month before we have the wifi u= p and running in the space. See you soon- email me with any questions. Nate On Mon=2C Jul 30=2C 2012 at 2:32 PM=2C Nate Hill = wrote: OK=2C here it goes: I'm calling a Chugalug meeting!
