Joe Wilcox declares independence from Apple

From: James Nylen

Joe Wilcox of BetaNews is moving away from Apple (to Google), at least
partly due to their patent-related bullying behavior.

Is that a good/meaningful choice? Is there any end in sight to the BS
patent-wrangling that companies use to try to cripple their competitors?

=============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ I liked the article. However the comments on that article made we want to punch my screen while yelling "idiots... All of you!!" Why does the apple fans seem so vile and vicious? On top of that, they were making horrible arguments for Apple while they spewed their vitriol.

=============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ Ugh. Reading that article just made me want to punch my screen even more. It essentially is a summation of every single reply to the original article that James posted. So, heres what I gathered from it. We should all run and patent every single idea that we come up with, regardless of how general it is. We should do this even if we have no plans of bringing this to fruition any time soon. Then, whenever someone else has an idea that is remotely similar.....BOOM! We sue the pants off of them because it was our idea, even though were not doing anything with it. And because we are a company that relies so much on one single product (Apple's iPhone) we are morally correct to do this and our fans will rejoice in our protectionism. If someone comes up with a better product, a company shouldn't try to remove the competition using blanket patents and old "ideas". One could say that MySpace should sue the pants off Facebook since its essentially ripping off what MySpace created using the Apple mentality. If a company doesn't innovate enough to keep up with the market, someone else will.

=============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ No. omfg - no What the article I posted was saying.... /suppressing rage/... is that is what is WRONG with the PATENT SYSTEM. The article says that is the way the patent system works. Apple is merely using the tools made available to them by the US government. If you have a problem with that - THEN FIX THE GOVERNMENT. And, no, damn it, it's not the "APPLE WAY OF THINKING" - everyone does it. Don't hate the playa - hate the game. And believe me - I hate the hell out of the game. I don't believe in any sort of intellectual property rights at all - in any way shape or form. Copyrights, patents, whatever - call it what you want - it's BS. It kills innovation. It harms the free market. It cripples the little guy. It's all wrong. The only thing remotely close to IP that I would agree with is trademarks. Basically, don't lie about who you are. And don't take credit for someone else's work. (Meaning - I /should/ be able to make and sell as many physical copies of Shakespearean works as i want. I /should not/ be able to sell them as "Chad Smith's Awesome plays and stuff") *- Chad W. Smith*
