Ok so what would something like this look like?
Any examples people know of?
How do we keep it from getting really old really fast?
Who and why would people visit?
Is there a better solution than a web page?
=============================================================== From: Dave Brockman ------------------------------------------------------ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 A rolodex with a "skillz" tab? I've seen a few examples of skillsets, but I really don't know what the original vision was/is. Use it, and keep it updated. I believe the purpose was for local geeks to have a databank of skillsets with geeks good with those skillsets, for referral purposes. Based on the criteria I've seen so far, probably not. The Browse Geeks page would allow a user to look at an alphabetical list of geeks on the site. The Find Geeks page would allow you to find geeks by skill sets. You would need a registration page to allow geeks to upload a picture, bio, links to twitter, linkedin, github, etc, and a list of skills. I think you could pay for the hosting with google ads or by getting local employers to place ads on the site. I don't have the required skills to build something like this in a reasonable amount of time but I would be happy to talk through a design and help produce any necessary content if someone wants to build it. I was thinking of some web site names like chattanoogahasgeeks.com or chattanoogageeks.com. Stephen =============================================================== From: David White ------------------------------------------------------ /me goes to NameCheap and farm these domains & all other related domains to scalp them when the community comes looking I like where this is going.... could also be a really good resource to point Chattanoga employers to as well. =============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ If you scalp the domains, the Lug will hold you accountable for building the site :) =============================================================== From: William Wade ------------------------------------------------------ I was thinking that perhaps it should be hosted on Chugalug.org. Perhaps that would feel a bit limiting to Chugalug folk only, but I think for the most part we have a fair name in the geek community. Perhaps something that might actually work out more useful is a place for people to post that they are looking for new employment. Posts would need to be renewed every 60 days or so? That way it would be a fresh place to find geeks looking for work, and the people who post are more likely to do a nice job. Just brainstorming some. I am willing to put some work into it, if it something that will be used. =============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ I would be willing to provide free hosting for the site. I am running DirectAdmin as a "web control panel" for my customers, instead of cPanel. I just suck at building pretty sites. A site I built would look like that professors site that was posted to the lug a few weeks back. HEHE. But, I have a damn good machine to host the site on in a local datacenter. |
