From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Well, i got laid off yesterday. Yates (my former employer) said they were having a work slowdown and needed to shed some employees, and since I wasn't busy enough (I think) they decided corporate could handle my job. :( If anyone knows of any decent "Geek of All Trade" jobs out there, please point me in the right direction. I've already made contact with Unum and EPB, as well as with the company doing the hiring for a desktop support person for Wacker (the customer at the site where I used to work.) As usual, the resume is freshly updated and ready to fire off at a moment's notice! Thanks!

=============================================================== From: Ralph Edge ------------------------------------------------------ Got a resume? If not...a list of programming languages/databases you are familiar with? -Ralph

=============================================================== From: William Wade ------------------------------------------------------ This is a good thing to have no matter what. I try to make sure that every time I complete a large project at work to add it then and there to my resume, or at least to the "full" resume that I pull from when creating in the end.

=============================================================== From: Eric Wolf ------------------------------------------------------ John, We've got to get you into a position that lasts more than a few months. At the very least to cut down on your OT traffic on CHUGALUG! Of course, changing jobs helps keep the mind sharp and it's hard to find jobs that last nowadays. Look at me - I've been working for the Federal Government for the past 3.5 years. Traditionally this was considered the most stable kind of job. But I'm actually a "student employee" which means they need to hire me for real when I finish my PhD. The current budget situation is making it almost impossible to create a new federal position (despite the fact that there are fewer Federal employees now than there has been since before Nixon including the temporary surge in numbers due to the decennial census!). I've only worked in the same office with you once over a decade ago. But what I saw then was you have one very unique skill. You are able to handle difficult telephone support issues with grace and ease. The flaw in that job (doing phone support for COL) was that your calls took too long. It's not your fault. In fact, that should be considered an important talking point in your favor: you are willing to take the time to manage the customer's concerns and resolve the issue. Unfortunately for COL (true for all ISPs in the late 90s), telephone support was the make-or-break cost point. If I recall correctly, one normal call to tech support would wipe out the profits related to a customer for an entire year. Increasing the cost of that call didn't help. Your skills were not in the right place. If I were to make a recommendation for you based on my experience working in the same office: you need to be doing similar support but in a much higher-margin market. You need to find a market based on somewhat complex technology where the users may lack deep technical skills. Not sure where that is... The Apple Store comes to mind but you really want to shoot higher than retail. I wonder if any of the investment firms in Chattanooga have on-staff support people for clients who do day trading. I know the systems day traders use are pretty cool and many day traders have more money than tech skills. -Eric -=--=---=----=----=---=--=-=--=---=----=---=--=-=- Eric B. Wolf 720-334-7734

=============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Not a programmer. More of a hardware geek. Yes, I've got a resume. I will shoot it to you shortly.

=============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ John, Take a look at www.mohawkjobs.com if theres anything on there thats interesting to you, let me know and I will give you a reference and help you get your resume to the right folks.

=============================================================== From: Bret McHone ------------------------------------------------------ If you live around Knoxville we'll be posting a couple more jobs at some point. Hopefully sooner rather than later. One will be a peer to help with my workload (Networking/Storage/Virtualization/Server Management/etc...), the other will be desktop support. Granted, they may be posted anywhere from weeks to months from now. We don't have any control over when HR actually posts the position. From previous experience I'm betting it won't be until July... AFTER half the projects are done that I need help with. -B

=============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Oh, yeah. My resume is definitely updated! :D

=============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know if they do have anything like that. I wouldn't really know where to start, but I guess I could contact the guys who used to do the 1-4 slot on talk radio, and maybe they could point me in the right direction. Thanks, Eric!

=============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Thanks, Lynn... I already applied for the only position I saw that looked like I might qualify, the IS Systems Management Tech I. Feel free to put in a good word for me there. :D I'm also up for a "temp" position reimaging and installing additional software on Desktop machines through Manpower.

=============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Ok, I got the temp position. Crossing my fingers for the "real" job, or something even better! :D I've got "feelers" out for multiple companies and will continue looking unless/until I get a permanent job with a decent salary!

=============================================================== From: Ed King ------------------------------------------------------ congrats on getting a new job so fast :) I was thinking (hey, what's that burning smell?) that our Chugalug group has a shitload of skills among us, and we should have each others backs and recommend each other when opportunities arise, but there is not (to my knowledge) a user-friendly easily searchable list of members, skillsets, and contact info, such that, if someone were to call me and ask if I would fix their computer, and I didn't have time or desire to do the job myself, I could pull up that list and quickly give them at least one Chugalug member's name and contact info (or give them the link and let them search the list themselves) indeed, I had someone ask me to work on their pc yesterday, but I'd much rather let someone else earn that dollar while I'm installing a pitman arm. so what say ye to a Chugalug Mad Skillz webpage idea? ----- Original Message ---- From: John Aldrich Ok, I got the temp position.
