=============================================================== From: Mike Harrison ------------------------------------------------------ Please remember that such lists of skills are often malleable. They are usually "wish lists" or "laundry lists" of skills. If you hit the key points, apply, You might be the best fit for the job for many other reasons. Personality, "soft skills", 4 out of the 10 technologies listed may be irrelevant. In reality, sometimes the answer is: I can handle 75% of your needs myself and know when to call in an expert. (Hey, Aaron, Dave, Jim.. Etc.. that means you) For example: BGP is a pain, but once setup it is usually done until you change upstream ISP's. How often do you do that at a big company? It's an annual contract at least. Applying for a job is not like applying for a credit card and getting denied. It does not change some score in a central computer (yet). =============================================================== From: Bret McHone ------------------------------------------------------ Right on. A lot of times there is also a disconnect between IT and HR on job requirements. Worst case your resume gets thrown away. I have been contacted a couple times about resumes I had submitted for a previous job and they kept it on file for other positions. Ie... applying can't hurt. -B =============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Well, the biggest problem is that the job is in Brentwood. :D I'd probably have to relocate, and I don't really want to do that... then again, I might have to. =============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Yes, but look at the location... Brentwood, TN. i.e. Nashville. Three hours from where I'm at now. I sure as heck am not going to commute. :D =============================================================== From: Dave Brockman ------------------------------------------------------ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'm guessing from what was posted it would come with a fairly substantial pay increase. No offense, but you don't have a lot of options in your current locale -- Brentwood is much closer to a lot of opportunity. I sent the recruiter another email this morning advising him I had reconsidered my decision not to apply. :D =============================================================== From: Cameron Kilgore ------------------------------------------------------ I would not expect a response at this point. If you don't know what to say, don't say anything until you've meditated on it/discussed it and are comfortable with your response. Recruiters will give you at least a day before they scratch you off the list. And don't be upset that you missed this one, I burned through (and burned down) quite a few recruiters before I found myself back at work. Unrelated topic, what's your experience with Content Management Systems like WordPress and Drupal. What about JavaScript? Contact me off-list if you know either of these things. --Cameron =============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ In a word -- none. I'm willing to learn, though. OTOH, I got a call from Tandus this afternoon. They want to talk to me, which would be nice as their offices are in Dalton, so I could definitely save gas! |
