=============================================================== From: Smitty ------------------------------------------------------ Seconding request. (c:

=============================================================== From: Randy Yates ------------------------------------------------------ What is it? It's Google so third!

=============================================================== From: DJ Smith ------------------------------------------------------ Thirding request XD

=============================================================== From: William Wade ------------------------------------------------------ Sure.. I'll fourth it. In other news, I love how it appears that Google is learning from their failures. Wave was a failure, but they learned from it and added the best parts of it into Google Docs, and now into this. Buzz was more of a policy failure, but I think they learned from that as well.

=============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ Didn'y google already try Social Networking with Orkut and it failed miserably? Looks like google+ is a new take on social networking.

=============================================================== From: Randy Yates ------------------------------------------------------ I think these things keep failing because they limit the trial. How can you limit the trial of social networking software. The whole point is to get all your friend on it. If you have no one to talk to within the app, no one is going to adopt it. Furthermore, they create buzz for something and by the time it's available to the public there's no buzz left. It's bad marketing.

=============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ If someone does have an invite, I'd like one. - Chad W Smith "I like a man who's middle name is W." - President George W. Bush - February 10, 2003 bit.ly/gwb-dubya

=============================================================== From: Smitty ------------------------------------------------------ Testing the waters. I think they've done a good idea w/ the concepts of social networking in G+. Taking the features you wish were available in Facebook. Hopefully they won't pull this one.

=============================================================== From: James Nylen ------------------------------------------------------ The reasons Google deploys new products like that are primarily technical - to make sure the architecture can scale gradually to its expected capacity. It makes people say "hey, that sounds cool, I want to try that" but they remember it because they can't at first.

=============================================================== From: Phil Sieg ------------------------------------------------------ I am beginning to feel about social networking the way I do about frakin = "reality tv". =============================================================== From: Cameron Kilgore ------------------------------------------------------ I have a Facebook profile, fifteen Twitter accounts (most novelty), and a myspace page that I haven't used in six years. I'm all socialed out. --Cameron

=============================================================== From: Randy Yates ------------------------------------------------------ I understand that they are testing the scalability of the software, but I disagree with: "From a marketing perspective, I think it actually has the opposite effect. It makes people say 'hey, that sounds cool, I want to try that' but they remember it because they can't at first." They should keep the testing as quiet as possible, and then increase the buzz and they near release. You don't build a roller coast then make everyone stand in line a year before letting them ride it.

=============================================================== From: Randy Yates ------------------------------------------------------ I apologize for all my typos this morning. Here is a pretty good Google tool that I'm just finding out about this morning (from Reddit.com): http://www.google.com/webfonts/v2 I'm sure most of you have heard of it. -- Google reads my email!

=============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ WRONG SIR! Six flags does exactly that. Build a roller coaster, then make you wait in line a year to ride it. :) Sorry, had to do that.

=============================================================== From: Randy Yates ------------------------------------------------------ Well I meant a literal year straight, not the two hours that seem like a year.

=============================================================== From: Bret McHone ------------------------------------------------------ dangit! I was writing the same thing and you beat me to it..

=============================================================== From: Randy Yates ------------------------------------------------------ I'd like to point out that I haven't been to six flags since 1995, and that was for a class trip in my senior year of high school. I stay away from the place main because of the long lines you have to stand in for rides. So, while there are plenty of people waiting in line for those rides at six flags, I'm sure very few enjoy it. The difference with Google is that my kids aren't going to pester me use one of Google's hyped up flops.

=============================================================== From: Cameron Kilgore ------------------------------------------------------ Which is for the best. After the class action over Buzz, Google has gotten the idea that such products should be opt-in. Facebook, not so much. --Cameron

=============================================================== From: Ryan Bales ------------------------------------------------------ Great article by wired about this very issue. http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/06/inside-google-plus-social/ ~Ryan Bales

=============================================================== From: Randy Yates ------------------------------------------------------ That doesn't really have anything to do with their "trial" invites. They were doing invites before the whole buzz class action fiasco. Of course they should make everything opt-in and not automatic. I'm just saying that their buzz around a new product is enormous when first release it to trial beta testers. This added to the enormous wait everyone else has before they can use the product, and you end up with a mixture that doesn't work well for a "social network" platform. Social networks expand and get used because you can invite your friends to them. That's the main point to a social network. Any social app that doesn't allow one to invite friends can't really be tested well. So what's the point of leaving it locked down in "trial mode" for months before everyone else can join. Social apps without the "social" part can't be used.

=============================================================== From: Cameron Kilgore ------------------------------------------------------ http://thenextweb.com/shareables/files/2009/11/media

=============================================================== From: Smitty ------------------------------------------------------ Anyone think that it being a social network, they release it w/ say 1000 initial ppl, each w/ 10 invites. Who you invite automatically builds your social network. By the time they start accepting people on the 'sign up list', it's viral w/ invites being received from friends instead of 'Google'.. Obviously they'd start w/ a larger set. I wouldn't be surprised if they did that to build out a natural social network initially.

I don't have any older email. My memory ends there. But I do have 14K emails occupying 3.3GB. FYI: eBay shuts down any auctions selling any kind of Google Invites. I managed to sell enough of those Voice invites I overpaid for to break even right before they opened up to everyone. But I had to manage a half dozen eBay accounts. I would manage to sell one or two invites before eBay nixed the auction. After a couple tries, they'd freeze the account for a few days. It was a PITA. I created the ginvite.com site to try to continue the process and meet eBay's rules. I paid $20 for an eBay classified listing that only marketed the site for sale. eBay still killed off the listing even though I was playing by their stated rules. -Eric -=--=---=----=----=---=--=-=--=---=----=---=--=-=- Eric B.
